October 29, 2009 – Bright lights sparkled at The Carlu on October 29 as YSM held its third annual gala event in support of the Scholarship Program. The theme this year was Bright Lights of Broadway and guests were transported to Forty-Second Street as they entered the beautiful Art Deco venue and listened to their favourite Broadway tunes at the piano bar.
But the brightest lights of all were the young people who received financial support for their post-secondary education from the YSM Scholarship Fund. Two new recipients were featured on stage and several others were in attendance.
“With my fantastic mentor and the financial support from the YSM Scholarship, I look forward to completing my education and attaining my goal of becoming a pediatrician,” said Ratul Islam, long time volunteer with YSM children’s programs who is in first year at University of Toronto.
Paula Reid, studying Social Work at Ryerson, told the crowd, “When I walk across the stage four years from now with my diploma, I want you all to rejoice with me!”
With ticket sales, sponsorships, silent auction and tickets purchased for draws revenues were over $123,000. All proceeds of the event go towards the YSM Scholarship Fund. Every year YSM helps up to 30 young people in financial need to fulfill their dream of college or university education. Students are matched with a volunteer adult mentor for advice and guidance.
The Bright Lights committee, headed by Honourary Chair Aubrey Dan and Co-Chairs Wendy Switzer-Myles and Nonie LaPrairie-McConvey, provided over 300 guests with an evening to remember. Several groups provided musical entertainment with singer Catherine McKinnon being a highlight. Our thanks go to volunteer designer Sinclair Russell and his team of Seneca College students for the dazzling themed décor.
Once again, generous fashion designers donated fabulous fashion prizes. Models circulated throughout the evening showing off designer creations. Thank you so much to the designers (listed left) and to everyone who contributed to the Silent Auction.
Michael Serapio of City TV was a charming host for the formalities of the evening, which included words from Brad Offman, President of Presenting Sponsor Mackenzie Financial Charitable Foundation, and YSM’s CEO Rick Tobias.
